“Anora”, which stars Armenian actors Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan, is officially the front-runner win Best Picture at the Academy Awards after winning the Directors Guild of America Award and Producers Guild of America Award, Armenian Film Society writes.
The DGA and PGA Awards are widely regarded as strong precursors for the Academy Awards, where “Anora” is nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (Mikey Madison), Best Supporting Actor (Yuriy Borisov), and Best Editing. The film also won Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards.
If “Anora” wins the Oscar for Best Picture, it’ll make the first-ever film to win Best Picture that features Armenian dialogue.
In May 2025, “Anora” won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. There have only been three films in the history of the Academy Awards that have won Best Picture: “The List Weekend”, “Marty”, and “Parasite”.
The Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2, 2025.
