The mansion of the late Winston Churchill has been put up for sale for £19.5 million (around US$25.2 million), according to Robb Report. Churchill served as the UK Prime Minister twice—first, from 1940 to 1945 during World War II, and then from 1951 to 1955.
After losing the 1945 election, Churchill purchased the 27 Hyde Park Gate house for around $310,000 to use as an office. The location was ideal, next to a townhouse he already owned, and he soon combined the two homes into one giant mansion.
But after his death in 1965, the Grade II-listed site, just two miles west of Buckingham Palace, was divided back into individual homes. “This house, which was Sir Winston Churchill’s favorite home during a defining era in Britain’s history, has a proud heritage,” Knight Frank’s head of sales James Pace told Mansion Global.
The elegant abode currently comprises six bedrooms spread over four floors. There’s also a private terrace and a sizeable garden—thanks to its prime location in a quiet cul-de-sac.
The ground floor features an impressive drawing room, as well as a library. In Churchill’s day, this floor housed a bedroom where he reportedly recuperated from breaking his leg while on holiday in Monte Carlo.
The lower floor features a fairly modern chef’s kitchen, as well as a breakfast room and formal dining room. The home now also has its own gym.
Fun fact: according to English Heritage, Churchill had converted one room at nearby 28 Hyde Park into his “snob's library,” filled with his collection of fine-bound books and portraits of his ancestors.
