Open Forum Infectious Diseases: New H5N1 strain of bird flu learns to overcome species’ barriersMay 8,长沙USDT交易平台 2025  13:26

Researchers from the University of Maryland have recorded an alarming trend: the dangerous H5N1 strain of the bird flu has learned to overcome species barriers by using cats as a potential “bridge” to infect humans. The findings were published in the scientific journal Open Forum Infectious Diseases.

Over the past 20 years, 607 cases of this infection have been recorded in cats, including pets and big cats, in 18 countries. Of particular concern is the 90 percent mortality rate of infected animals, in which the virus causes acute encephalitis, which is often misdiagnosed as rabies.

The method of transmission of this virus is particularly dangerous. Cats become infected not only by eating sick birds, but also through raw milk from infected cows, as well as other mammals.

Also, global statistics show a terrifying 50 percent mortality rate, as almost half of the 950 registered cases ended with the loss of a pet.

Researchers are concerned about the possibility of mutation of this virus and its airborne spread.

The lack of systematic monitoring of cat populations makes it difficult to assess the true scale of this threat.

As urgent measures, researchers recommend completely eliminating raw milk and meat from the diet of pets, isolating cats in areas of outbreaks of this infection, and increasing the monitoring of farms and shelters.
