Apple’s 20th Anniversary iPhone Redesign Could Be Seriously Expensive — Here’s Why

Apple is preparing a major redesign of the iPhone for 2027 to celebrate the device’s 20th anniversary. While many details are still under wraps, one thing is clear: Apple plans to incorporate significantly more glass into the design.

A special anniversary model would almost certainly carry a premium price tag under normal circumstances — but now, it’s looking like it could be even more expensive than expected.

One major factor? Ongoing tariffs on Chinese imports. While the tech industry currently enjoys some tariff exemptions, those policies aren’t guaranteed to last.

Apple has been working to expand iPhone production in India, but shifting the entire manufacturing operation isn’t something that can happen overnight. As of now, Apple can meet “roughly a third of annual U.S. demand” with production based in India.

Although Apple aims to move more of its manufacturing outside China to reduce tariff impacts, producing cutting-edge devices like the 20th-anniversary iPhone remains a challenge. According to Bloomberg, while India-based factories can match China’s quality for current models, the complexity of the anniversary model — requiring new components and production methods — makes it highly unlikely that it can be manufactured outside China by 2027. Historically, Apple has always launched major new product designs from its Chinese manufacturing base.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has often praised the exceptional manufacturing capabilities found in China. While Apple is eager to diversify its supply chain, introducing a highly advanced new iPhone without China’s manufacturing support appears unrealistic at this stage.

Currently, tariffs on Chinese goods sit at a minimum of 145%, and they could climb as high as 245%. Unless major changes occur, the 20th-anniversary iPhone is shaping up to be one of Apple’s priciest models yet.
