Academy Sports and Outdoors on Tuesday said net sales at the Katy, Texas-based retailer fell 1.4 percent to $1.36 billion, citing pressures in the current economic environment for the decline.

Comparable sales were down 5.7 percent for the three months ending May 4. As a result of dwindling sales, the sportswear retailer said net income for the quarter was $76.5 million, down 18.6 percent from $94 million the year prior.

"As expected, our first quarter results reflect that our customers remain under pressure in the current economic environment," said Steve Lawrence, chief executive officer, Academy Sports and Outdoors.

"We will navigate through the remainder of the year by continuing to lean into our position as the value leader in our space, while also inspiring customers to shop through introductions and expansions of new and innovative products. We will also continue making strategic investments in our long-range growth initiatives. We are pleased that we drove a positive comp in our new stores and omnichannel business. Academy has the right elements in place to achieve our long-range goals: a well-established business model, an experienced leadership team and a strong balance sheet."

Academy opened two new stores during the first quarter. In 2025, the company plans on opening 15 to 17 new stores as part of a larger goal to open 160 to 180 stores over the next five years.

In July, the retailer announced the promotion of Carl Ford to executive vice president and chief financial officer.
