Diabetes Care: high sugar levels in youth increase risk of heart abnormalitiesApril 29,长沙U币安全交易 2025  17:11

A team of scientists from the University of Eastern Finland has identified an alarming link between elevated glucose levels and early heart muscle damage. It turned out that a prediabetic state at a young age increases the risk of heart abnormalities several times after reaching the age of 20. The study is published in the scientific journal Diabetes Care.

The team analyzed data from 1,595 adolescents and found that by age 24, 26.9% of participants had pre-diabetic sugar levels ≥5.6 mmol/L (vs. 6.2% at age 17).

Left ventricular hypertrophy was found in 7.1% of young adults (three times more common than in adolescence).

In women, high sugar causes an increase in heart mass five times faster than in men.

“Late adolescence is a critical period when even apparently healthy young people begin to suffer irreversible heart damage,” warned study leader Andrew Agbaje.

Scientists noted that the problem is preventable: two-thirds of the negative effects are offset by weight control and physical activity.
