People are making the most of the freezing weather in northeast China, as sculptors delicately carve ice into intricate structures resembling iconic castles and temples, and visitors enjoy the art and thrill of ice slides and other attractions at the annual Harbin Ice and Snow World festival, AP reports.

The waterfront venue features dozens of giant works of art, like the Taj Mahal in India, Osaka Castle in Japan, and Beijing’s own Temple of Heaven—all carved from translucent blocks of ice.

“The ice sculpture looks exactly like [the Temple of Heaven],” said Jin Yiting, who traveled from Shanghai with her parents.

The festival also featured an ice sculpture inspired by China’s aircraft carrier Liaoning. The sculpture, 65 meters long, 15 meters wide and 13 meters high, is built using a barge and a welded steel structure as a frame. Its exterior elements, including the flight deck and island, are made of ice blocks, Xinhua reports.

The main festival covers one square kilometer of the city, and the sculptures use 13,000 cubic meters of ice blocks—mostly cut from the nearby Songhua River.

The ice slides, the longest of which reaches 521 meters, are a key attraction of this winter festival.
