The scientific work was based on the Multidisciplinary study of health and development of residents of the city of Dunedin, which lasted 45 years. It involved 900 New Zealanders. The average age of the volunteers was 45 years old.
In the first step, scientists took retinal scans of all the volunteers. Then the data were compared with the results of cognitive tests designed to predict the risk of dementia. Observations were carried out from the birth of the participants and then regularly - at the ages of three, five, seven, nine, 11, 13, 13, 15, 18, 21, 26, 32, 38 and 45 years.
It turned out that people with abnormally thin retinas and pathologies of blood vessels of the eyes more often recorded signs of cognitive decline at the age of 45 years. According to experts, such changes may indicate impaired blood circulation in the body as a whole, which also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
According to scientists, eye imaging can be a simple and inexpensive method of assessing the early risk of dementia. However, the researchers emphasized that such a test can only indicate a potential threat, but not establish a definitive diagnosis.
