Being ridiculous is not sexy, says designer Michael Kors, who is looking to bring some sanity back to the red carpet, according to The Guardian.
One celebrity who was definitely not on Michael Kors' mood board for his New York Fashion Week show was Bianca Censori, who recently caused a stir by appearing nearly naked at the Grammys with her husband Kanye West.
"I'm not going to name names," the designer said, though he made it clear who he was referring to. "What we've seen on the red carpet recently is not sexy. Being ridiculous is not sexy." Kors, who once favored revealing dresses, says nude clothing is “boring now.” “I grew up on Cher. I’d love to see what she would wear, how naked she could be, how amazing she could look.”
Just last year, Kors dressed country singer Kelsea Ballerini at the Met Gala in a bold nude mesh dress embroidered with strategic silk rosebuds, inspired by a scene from American Beauty.
But 2025 is “crazy enough already,” Kors said ahead of his show. “When the world is this crazy, you need to feel confident and comfortable. What happened in L.A. is the apocalypse, and the idea of walking on the red carpet in a crazy dress seems out of place.”
Fashion has become “ridiculous,” Kors added. “Everyone is wearing too much makeup and too much hair. We need to calm down.”
Those who did make it onto Kors’ mood board are: Uma Thurman in the 1990s in a big black coat, Sharon Stone in a men’s plaid blazer in the 2000s, and Lauren Hutton in a trench coat in the 1970s.
On the runway, that spirit was embodied in shift dresses with sliding ties and black silk bias-cut evening blazers. No bones, no corsets, no stilettos.
“There’s not a single bodycon dress in the entire collection,” Kors noted. “It’s like a suit from another time.”
