A motorcycle-sized bluefin tuna has sold for $1.3 million at Japan's most prestigious fish market.

Michelin-starred sushi restaurants of the Onodera Group said the 276-kilogram (600-pound) fish sold for $1 million at Tokyo's Toyosu Fish Market on January 5, Kyodo news agency reports.

The bid is the second-highest since the world's largest seafood wholesale market began collecting data in 1999. The highest bid ever recorded was $3.1 million—for a 278-kilogram tuna in 2025.

Sellers from across Japan auction off their best catches at the market almost every morning. But the prestigious New Year auction holds special significance for participants who gather to compete for the honor of getting the first batch of the year.

"The first tuna of the year brings good luck," said Shinji Nagao, president of Sushi Onodera.
