NEJM: German surgeon contracted histiocytoma from a patient during surgeryJanuary 7,长沙大宗USDT收购 2025  18:46

Scientists have documented for the first time a case of cancer transmission from a patient to a surgeon during surgery. It is about “accidental transplantation” of a malignant tumor - fibrous histiocytoma. This unique case is described in a scientific article in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

A 53-year-old surgeon from Germany received a cut on his hand while placing a drain in a patient with soft tissue cancer. Despite immediate treatment and dressing of the wound, a lump formed at the site of the cut five months later. The tests performed revealed that the surgeon's tumor was malignant and genetically identical to the patient's cancer.

Fibrous histiocytoma is a rare type of malignant tumor, diagnosed in about 1,400 people each year. Scientists note that this case is unique because the immune system normally rejects foreign tissue. However, the surgeon developed an “ineffective anti-tumor immune response” that allowed the patient's tumor cells to take root.

The patient who had the surgery passed away several months later due to complications, although the surgery was successful. The surgeon performed the surgery and anti-tumor therapy, which prevented the cancer from spreading. Two years after the tumor was removed, the disease had not recurred.

Experts emphasize that cases of cancer transmission to health care workers are extremely rare, and there are no precise statistics. However, it is known that cancer cells from certain types of cancer - such as breast, lung, liver and other cancers - can spread during surgery. Therefore, medical professionals urge strict adherence to all precautions during surgery.
