As part of a larger plan to make Dubai more walkable by 2040, local authorities have approved the Future Loop elevated walkway, Dezeen reports. Just over a mile long, the Future Loop will provide almost 30,000 square meters of air-conditioned space and the same amount of shaded outdoor areas, both designed to encourage year-round walking—even in Dubai’s notoriously hot summers.
“Dubai is a city of the future, committed to creating a healthy and happy urban environment,” Dubai’s ruler Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said in a statement. “The Dubai Walk masterplan encourages active lifestyles and provides sporting opportunities for all, making walking a central part of our culture and everyday lives. This vision positions Dubai as one of the world’s healthiest and most sustainable cities.”
Also, Al Maktoum posted renderings of the Future Loop on his X account. Accordingly, many of Dubai’s most important institutions and visual landmarks—including the Museum of the Future, Dubai World Trade Centre, Emirates Towers, and the Dubai International Financial Centre—will be connected by this loop as well as nearby subway stations.
And that’s just one of the public transport options planned for improvement as part of the plan, with new bus and bike routes also in the works. Also, there are 110 bridges and underpasses planned.
Furthermore, Dubai will considerably increase its green space with a major 40-mile planted highway that will act as a central pedestrian route through the urban space.
